Part 2: The Betrayal

Part 2: The Betrayal

The note went on, every word feeling like an icy drop down my spine: “The accident won’t be an accident, Em. Look at the bank statement from two weeks ago. Sarah took out a loan using our house as collateral. She had my forged signature. I found out, and when I confronted her, she threatened to ruin us.”

My hands trembled so violently that the papers nearly slipped from my grip. Sarah? My sweet, devoted sister who had spent the last month cooking meals for my kids and holding my hand? Attached to the note were printouts of secret accounts opened in my name, signed with a scrawled version of Liam’s signature that looked almost identical—except for a small dot he always placed under the ‘m’ when he was being forced to sign something under duress. It was a signal he’d taught me years ago.

I looked up at his boss, Arthur, who stood by the window with a shadowed expression. “Did you know about this?” I whispered.

Arthur turned slowly, his eyes heavy with a warning. “Liam told me he was going to turn her in to the police the morning after he died,” he said softly. “Emily, the brake lines on his car didn’t just fail. He left this file here because he knew if something happened to him, she’d be the first one at your house.”

Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my bag. The screen lit up with Sarah’s name.

Part 3: The Trap

I answered the call, forcing my voice to sound flat and broken, just as it had for the past thirty days. “Hey, Sarah.”

“Em! Where are you?” Her tone was overly anxious, laced with that artificial sweetness I was now seeing right through. “I came by to check on the kids, but you weren’t home. I’m inside setting up lunch for them. Hey… by the way, I was looking for your spare house key in Liam’s study, and I noticed his office lockbox is open. Did you take anything out of it?”

A cold realization struck me: she wasn’t just checking on my children—she was hunting for this exact file. She knew Liam had documented everything.

“I’m just out running a few errands, Sarah,” I lied, signaling to Arthur to call the detective assigned to Liam’s case. “I’ll be home in twenty minutes.”

“Take your time, sweetie,” she replied, her voice dropping an octave into something chilled and calculating. “I’ll just wait right here in the study.”

I hung up, looking at Arthur. “She’s at my house. My kids are downstairs with the nanny, but Sarah is upstairs searching for this.”

Arthur pulled out a thumb drive from his pocket and handed it to me. “This has the video footage from the parking lot the night Liam died. It shows her car following his out of the building. You have enough to destroy her, Emily. But you need to be careful.”
