My husband had a vasectomy, and two months later I realized I was pregnant. He accused me of cheating, left me for another woman, and yet I did not suspect that the worst shock would be waiting for me at the ultrasound.
When I saw the two lines on the test, I cried for joy.
I thought it was a miracle.
My hands were shaking as I ran to Diego to show it to him.
He sat in the kitchen, drank coffee and seemed so calm, as if nothing in the world could shake him.
“I’m pregnant,” I told him.
He didn't smile.
He didn't hug me.
He didn't ask if I was okay.
He just put his cup on the table and stared at me as if I had brought something dirty into our house.
"This is impossible."
My neck closed.
“What do you mean by impossible?”
Diego made a cold laugh.
I got sterilized two months ago, Laura. I'm not stupid.
That word hit me like a blow.
Stupid.
This is what the man I had loved for eight years called me.
The same man who said the operation was “for us” because the money was tight, because we could “decide later”.
I reminded him that the doctor had said it was not immediate.
This follow-up was necessary.
This pregnancy could happen anyway.
But Diego had already stopped listening.
His sentence was already written in his face.
“Who is he?” he asked.
I froze.
“What?”
“The Father.” Tell me who he is.
I was sick.
Not because of the baby.
Because of him.
That same night he packed a suitcase.
Not many clothes.
Just enough to show me that another place was already waiting for me.
“I’m going to Paola,” he said without any shame.
Paola.
His colleague.
The woman who used to send me SMS recipes.
The woman who once told me, “Lauri, your marriage is so beautiful.”
The woman who was apparently just waiting for an opportunity to take my place.
The next day my mother-in-law came with two black bags.
Not to comfort me.
To pick up Diego's belongings.
“How shameful, Laura,” she said, looking at my stomach as if it were already evidence against me. “Diego doesn’t deserve that.”
“I didn’t cheat on him.”
She gave me a pitying smile.
"That's what they all say."
Within a week, half the neighborhood knew.
The cheating wife.
The shameless woman.
The one who got pregnant after her husband’s vasectomy.
Diego then posted a photo with Paola at a restaurant in Polanco. She held his arm.
The caption read:
Sometimes life eliminates a lie to give you peace.

I read it while sitting on the bathroom floor, crying and surrendering at the same time.
I found no rest.
I was horrified.
I am scared to lose my home.
I’m scared to raise a child alone.
