The spinal form, which affects the spinal cord and is more common in men, is characterized by abnormal muscle contractions, cramps in the arms and legs and unusual fatigue.
The bulbar form, which is more common in women, affects the throat and mouth muscles and makes it difficult to swallow, chew and speak clearly.
Almost a third of patients suffer from this form of the disease.
A disease that progresses quickly and severely
ALS is a rapidly progressing disease. The health condition typically worsens three to five years after the first symptoms appear.
The muscles become increasingly weaker, which ultimately also affects the breathing muscles and makes everyday life much more difficult.
However, each patient has different symptoms: some suffer from joint pain and burning, others have difficulty speaking or chewing. These symptoms act like invisible problems that make mobility restrictions worse.
