After the heat has so far determined the weather conditions, between Tuesday, June 23rd and Wednesday, the 24. June, a significant increase in instability can be observed, especially during the hottest hours of the day, when more energy accumulates in the atmosphere.
After mostly sunny and already very warm morning hours, especially the Alps and the Apennines will spread through the formation of strong vertical clouds.
These thunderstorm clouds, especially cumulonimbus clouds, can cause sudden and violent showers in the afternoon with locally violent eruptions.
In some cases, thunderstorms can extend from the mountains to the plains, and in particular affect the northern part of the Po plain and parts of the Tyrrhenian coast.
After this volatile phase, the heat will quickly increase again: The subtropical high-pressure area is gaining strength and brings stable weather with rising temperatures, reaching peaks of 39–40 °C at the weekend, resulting in another sustained heat wave. The news of the impending storm is no cause for rejoicing for sun-worshippers. They have to be patient until the weather stabilizes and they get the desired summer tan.
